Gym Members Are More Active & Healthy

It’s logical to assume that people with gym memberships might be in better shape than those who haven’t joined a workout facility. But a recent study out of Iowa State University found that not only are gym members healthier than non-members, they’re dramatically healthier. A release from the university stated, “Gym members were 14 times more aerobically active than non-members and 10 times more likely to meet muscle-strengthening guidelines, regardless of their age and weight.”

Study Details

The Iowa State University study examined more than 400 people. Half of the participants had a gym membership. Both groups were asked if they met the guidelines established for aerobic activity and strength training established by U.S. health officials—150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity each week, including at least two strength training workouts.

Of the study group, 75 percent of those with gym memberships met both exercise guidelines. However, only 18 percent of non-gym members said they met the aerobic and strength training goals. Nationally, half of Americans say they met the aerobic goal, while about 20 percent meet the goal for strength training.

Other Advantages

Not only did the gym member group meet the exercise guidelines, a majority exceeded them, spending at least 300 minutes a week engaged in some form of cardio exercise. As a result, the study participants with gym memberships were found to have lower odds of obesity, smaller waistlines, lower resting heart rates, and greater cardiorespiratory fitness (or better heart strength, lung function, blood circulation and muscle mass).

Unfortunately, only about 18 percent of Americans have a health club or gym membership.
